Auto Theft? The Door’s Open

Friday, September 21st, 2001 Auto

Most Americans are lackadaisical about locking up their cars, according to an auto insurer’s findings released today. Progressive Insurance, noting that cars are stolen in the United States at a rate of more than one a minute, announced survey results indicating that Americans make auto theft an easy job, with women being the least concerned about auto security. Progressive, based in Mayfield Village, Ohio, said 55 percent of respondents to its poll said they leave their car doors unlocked, while 34 percent say they leave the windows open when leaving their vehicle unattended. Six percent of respondents said they leave the keys in their vehicle when it is unattended, the study found. However, Progressive said that many of the respondents apparently don't think their behavior is careless. Indeed, 33 percent said they are not concerned at all about their vehicle being stolen.
