Big Cat-Risk States Growing

Homeowners insurers face a big challenge over the next five years as three disaster-prone states—California, Florida and Texas—are due to see a big increase in population, one leading insurance group warns. “I guess people want to live in places that are more hazardous. Over the last 30 or 40 years it is clear people want to live near hurricanes and earthquakes,” joked Dave Unnewehr, senior research manager for the American Insurance Association in Washington. “Seriously, there are economic opportunities in these states and because of the growth there, there needs to be an industry focus on exposure management and improving building codes, code enforcement and land use planning,” added Mr. Unnewehr.
