Black Soot Deposition

Wednesday, October 24th, 2001 Property

A family near Punxsutawney, Pa., had moved into their newly constructed all-electric home a year earlier, and were looking forward to the birth of their first child in two months. However, they felt uneasy about faint black streaks developing on the gable ceiling of their living room. Their uneasiness turned to alarm when they noticed distinct dark outlines on the carpet of the soon-to-be nursery. Their insurance agent referred a contractor to diagnose the problem. "Mold," the contractor concluded. "The roof is admitting moisture and we have a serious mold condition above the ceiling. That drywall will have to come down." Faced with major construction just before the birth of their child, they asked the agent to get another opinion "just to be sure."
