BMW to Recall 1.6 Million Cars Worldwide on Air Bag Safety Concerns

BMW on Wednesday said it would recall about 1.6 million cars of its 3 series sedans world-wide, as part of an initiative to replace passenger-side front air bags affecting seven major auto makers. BMW said its recall is voluntary, and it will replace air bags that could explode under certain circumstances. Including other auto makers, the problem until the end of June had led to recalls of 10 million vehicles since 2009. About a third of the BMW cars—574,000—to be recalled are in the U.S., the luxury car maker said.
