Thursday, January 15th, 2004 Legislation & Regulation LiabilityAfter passing the U.S. House of Representatives twice in the past two sessions, a bill to reform the class action lawsuit system recently was voted on by the Senate, failing passage by one vote. The close procedural vote was due to the efforts of the business community, insurers, and concerned citizens, according to the Alliance of American Insurers. “The American public is growing weary of the continued abuse of the class action system and is making its voice heard,” said Kenneth Schloman, Washington counsel for the Alliance. “The publics message to our nations leadership is to put a stop to civil actions that do little to achieve justice, but do much to enrich a few.”
