A family in northwest suburban South Elgin awoke early Sunday morning to a car smashing into their home and landing in the basement.The driver of a car traveling northbound in the 100 block of South Gilbert Street struck a curb on the west side of the street, lost control and smashed into the south wall of a two-story gray home around 2:30 a.m., according to South Elgin police and fire department officials.At the time of the accident, a couple and their three children were asleep inside the home.
