The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers is officially over. The outbreak, first reported on October 22, affected 104 individuals across 14 states, with 34 requiring hospitalization. Tragically, one death was linked to the infection, traced to contaminated slivered onions served on the burgers.
The onions, sourced from Taylor Farms’ Colorado facility, were quickly recalled following the outbreak. This supplier serves three McDonald’s distribution centers. Affected restaurants temporarily removed Quarter Pounders from their menus until the situation was resolved.
McDonald’s has since resumed sales of Quarter Pounders, now featuring slivered onions sourced from a new supplier. The company emphasized its commitment to food safety and has implemented stricter quality controls to prevent future incidents.
