GEICO is facing a nationwide class action lawsuit stemming from allegations of compromising customer privacy through the unauthorized release of their driver’s license numbers. The released information was reportedly exploited by identity thieves to fraudulently obtain unemployment benefits, leading to significant implications for the affected individuals.
The accusations revolve around the GEICO website automatically populating driver’s license numbers when users enter personal details in order to receive insurance quotes.
The lawsuit claims that malicious actors capitalized on GEICO’s system vulnerability between November 24, 2020, and March 1, 2021. By exploiting the auto-populated license numbers and additional personal information, these criminals reportedly orchestrated a widespread breach.
Plaintiffs argue that GEICO’s negligence in safeguarding their personal data exposed them to elevated risks of identity fraud. GEICO will face charges of negligence and violation of the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act.
