Congress Passes Superfund Reform Bill
Thursday, March 28th, 2002 Legislation & Regulation LiabilityCongress has approved a modest Superfund reform bill that exempts some small businesses from Superfund’s liability regime. The legislation, H.R. 1831, was passed by the Senate just before it adjourned for the year. It was approved by the House on May 22. The bill now goes to President George W. Bush for his signature. He is expected to sign the measure into law. Under H.R. 1831--which is called the Small Business Liability Protection Act--small businesses (defined as those with 100 or fewer employees) are exempt from Superfund liability if they contributed less than 110 pounds of liquid material or 200 pounds of solid material to a site on the National Priorities List.
