Cost of Leading Comp Claims Grows
Tuesday, April 8th, 2003 Workers' CompensationThe direct cost of claims from the 10 leading disabling work-related injuries and illnesses grew 8.3% between 1998 and 2000, outpacing inflation, according to Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. research. Employers paid $42.5 billion in wage-loss and medical payments in 2000, and three types of injuries were responsible for 51% of the cost, the Boston-based insurer reported in its 2003 Workplace Safety Index. Overexertion injuries nationwide cost employers $11.9 billion in direct costs in 2000, while falls on the same level cost $5.4 billion and bodily reaction, such as bending or slipping without falling, cost $4.4 billion.
