Dip In Comp Claims Factory Jobs Unrelated

Monday, February 19th, 2001 Workers' Compensation

A decline in the number of factory jobs in the United States is not a factor in the nationwide reduction in workplace injuries, a study has found. The conclusion, which goes against what has been the prevailing wisdom among industry experts, was included in a report prepared by the National Council on Compensation Insurance in Boca Raton, Fla. Tony DiDonato, who wrote the study with Christopher Poteet, said there had been a belief that the nation has moved away from blue-collar jobs to more of an office- and service-industry-oriented economy and "it was pretty surprising that it did not have any impact on the frequency decline." According to the study, allowing for changes in the occupational mix between 1993 and 1997 had no impact on an 18 percent decline in injury frequency.
