FEMA Reduces Initial Disaster Aid After Fraud
Tuesday, July 25th, 2006 Fraud PropertyFEMA announced on Monday that do to last year’s fraud in wake of the Katrina disaster, future disaster victims will get only $500 in immediate emergency aid from the government. Last year, families received up to $2,000 after Katrina. FEMA said that the amount will be cut to limit temptation to spend relief money on anything but emergency needs. During an audit of money FEMA paid to Katrina victims, congressional investigators have reported that FEMA lacked basic safeguards in various aid programs and lost as much as $1.4 billion to con artists and errors after the hurricane hit the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005.
