Florida Braces for Tropical Storm Helene as Evacuations Begin

Wednesday, September 25th, 2024

Tropical Storm Helene has triggered widespread evacuations across Florida as it strengthens in the Caribbean and heads toward the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasts from the National Hurricane Center predict Helene will become a Category 3 hurricane with winds reaching 115 mph at landfall, expected by Thursday. Evacuation orders have been issued in 13 Florida counties, with both state and federal authorities mobilizing resources, including generators and search-and-rescue teams. The Florida coastline, especially between Panama City and Tampa, faces significant storm surges, potentially up to 15 feet. The Florida Keys, Cuba, and parts of Mexico are also under storm warnings.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis compared Helene to Hurricane Michael, which devastated the Florida Panhandle in 2018. Residents are taking precautions, with many filling sandbags and fleeing to safer areas. Emergency declarations have been issued by both President Biden and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, with rainfall expected as far inland as Kentucky and Indiana.

As Helene approaches, Florida’s Division of Emergency Management urges residents to use the Know Your Zone map to identify evacuation routes.
