Four individuals, including two licensed public insurance adjusters, one unlicensed insurance adjuster, and a mold contractor, have been arrested on multiple felony charges for their alleged involvement in a scheme to defraud a 94-year-old woman and Citizens Insurance.

Investigators from the Florida Department of Financial Bureau’s Bureau of Insurance Fraud have accused the quartet of filing insurance claims on behalf of Gay Scott, the elderly victim, without her knowledge, all related to undamaged property. The alleged fraud attempt aimed to extract over $57,000 from both Scott and Citizens Insurance during the spring.

According to an agency spokesperson, the fraudulent claims were linked to purported water and mold-related damage in the victim’s kitchen and air conditioning unit. The four suspects are accused of forging Scott’s signature on numerous documents, including fraudulent homeowner claims, assignment of benefits papers, public adjuster contracts, and a service repair agreement.

If convicted on all charges, which include exploitation of the elderly, organized fraud, insurance fraud, grand theft, identity theft, uttering forged instruments, and being an unlicensed public adjuster, the suspects could face sentences ranging from 15 to 85 years in prison.
