Although a tsunami in the Gulf of Mexico would be unlikely, experts agree that if one was to hit this area of the United States, it would be as destructive as Hurricane Ivan was earlier in the year. The experts do say however that a wave that big would not hit the shore of the Southern United States because the friction created by the shallow bottom of the Gulf would cause the wave to break.
