Helmet law needs no tinkering

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011 Legislation & Regulation Liability

The winds of change have blown strongly in Lansing this year. The question is whether there’s enough left to repeal or weaken Michigan’s motorcycle helmet law. The law’s opponents hope so. They’ve been fighting its helmet requirement for decades. State lawmakers joined their ranks in recent years, but legislation to repeal the statute was vetoed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm in 2006 and 2008. Gov. Rick Snyder hasn’t taken a stand on the helmet law’s reform. If the latest legislation passes, however, only his veto would keep it from becoming law.
