Friday, September 21st, 2001 — Insurance industry leaders met today with President George W. Bush at the White House to discuss the implications for the industry of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that killed thousands of people, destroyed New York's World Trade Center, damaged the Pentagon, and downed four hijacked jets.
"We will meet our obligations to our policyholders," American Insurance Association President Robert E. Vagley said on behalf of the assembled insurance executives.
According to a statement released by the Washington-based AIA, Mr. Vagley went on to assure President Bush that the property-casualty insurance industry is "prudently managed. We believe that we can appropriately deal with the losses from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and still stand strong."
