Investigating Marine Claims

Friday, September 15th, 2000 Marine

Most company staff insurance adjusters and upper senior management, for the most part, do not have an established program for marine claims. Most insurance companies hire marine surveyors to handle such claims. Now, a marine surveyor is a person who is normally employed to inspect a vessel as to its condition and value. The marine surveyor is often self-employed and usually consists of one or two people in a small company. The surveyor spends most of the time conducting pre-purchase inspections for a client who is anticipating the actual purchase of a vessel. (For the purpose of this article, reference to the word "vessel" will mean yacht or small water craft.) The surveyor will operate the machinery, and conduct a sea trial and usually a haul-out inspection of the vessel to check the hull propellers, shafts and other structural items on the hull.
