Katrina Veers East: New Orleans Braces For Storm Surge

As sunrise approached the city of New Orleans, it brought pangs of fear as thousands of residents, who were unable or unwilling to flee the ravages of Katrina, waited in the New Orleans Superdome for the arrival 155 mph winds where overnight the hurricane’s windspeed dropped a few miles per hour and was downgraded to a Category 4. The National Hurricane Center in Miami predicted some fluctuations in strength prior to landfall, but said Katrina is expected to make landfall as either a Category 4 or a Category 5 hurricane.
