Mental Health Crisis Escalates Among Construction Workers, New Survey Finds

Wednesday, November 5th, 2025 Liability Life & Health Workers' Compensation

A growing mental health crisis is affecting construction workers across the U.S., with 64% reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression in the past year—a sharp rise from 54% in 2024. Clayco’s second annual mental health survey of over 2,000 workers and executives paints a troubling picture for the industry, highlighting widespread stigma, workplace discrimination, and a disconnect between leadership and labor when it comes to psychological support.

For claims adjusters and insurers, these findings point to an increasing volume of mental health-related claims, absenteeism, and potentially higher risk exposure. The data show that 36% of construction workers missed work due to mental health concerns, while 58% reported misusing substances to cope—an alarming trend that may lead to more disability claims, workers’ comp filings, or even liability disputes.

The survey also revealed persistent stigma, with 45% of workers saying they’d feel ashamed discussing mental health issues and 37% experiencing discrimination after seeking help. Meanwhile, a significant portion of executives admitted they’d reduce responsibilities or increase oversight on employees who disclose mental health struggles. This gap between perceived support and actual treatment may complicate claim investigations and the verification of workplace mental health resources.

Adjusters dealing with construction claims must be prepared for cases where mental health plays a central role. Factors like physical demands, tight deadlines, and a historically stoic work culture are exacerbating psychological stress, which in turn impacts injury recovery, return-to-work timelines, and workplace dynamics.

Understanding these systemic issues is key to fair claim evaluations and policy development. With more workers turning to both professional support and potentially harmful coping strategies, adjusters must be ready to assess claims where mental health intersects with workplace safety, productivity, and compliance risks.
