Mixed Results From IIHS Tests On Driver Assistance Technologies

Wednesday, August 8th, 2018 Auto Technology

Over the past few years, driver assistance features such as automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist have become increasingly more common. But how effective are they? According to a recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), these features still aren’t substitutes for actual human drivers, and the results varied significantly from brand to brand. During the study, IIHS senior research engineer Jessica Jermakian and her team evaluated the driver assistance technologies in five vehicles—a 2017 BMW 5 Series, 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, 2016 Tesla Model S, 2018 Tesla Model 3, and 2018 Volvo S90.
