Older Camry Tops Stolen Vehicle List

Wednesday, March 19th, 2003 Auto

A loss analysis by a technology firm has found that the 1989 Toyota Camry was the most stolen vehicle last year, beating out the 1991 Toyota Camry--the most stolen vehicle the year before. The older Camry was more of a theft target, because of the older models are a bigger factor in the total automobile population, according to Jeanene O‘Brien, director of marketing services for CCC Information Services Inc., which made the finding. There are more ‘89 Camrys on the road than the newer model, she explained. She also mentioned that Japanese auto models don‘t change styles for four to seven years. "Toyota and Honda average a 20 percent (parts) change and when they change, most of it is exterior. In theory, a braking mechanism from an ‘89 Camry could fit theoretically on a ‘95 or ‘98."
