A Brooklyn, N.Y., man has been arrested and charged with insurance fraud and grand larceny stemming from a claim he submitted stating that his vehicle was destroyed in the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11th. According to the state’s insurance department, Everton Lewis fraudulently submitted a claim to Geico Insurance for a vehicle that, he said, was destroyed in the garage of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11th. Geico paid more than $38,000 on the claim.

Subsequently, Lewis attempted to reinsure the same vehicle with the same insurance company, according to the DOI. Members of the Fraudulent Accident Investigation Squad, acting in cooperation with the Insurance Department’s Fraud Bureau, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, the National Insurance Crime Bureau, and Geico’s Special Investigation Unit arrested Lewis and recovered the vehicle in question at his residence.
