Scary data on Halloween car vandalism

Halloween is all about dressing up in wild costumes, ringing door bells, collecting candy and, in some cases, busting up somebody else’s car. Fortunately, there’s a lot more of the first three things on that list than the last one, but insurance records show you’re almost twice as likely to have your car vandalized on Halloween as on an ordinary day. The Highway Loss Data Institute took a tally of insurance claims for things like slashed tires and busted windows from 2008 through 2012. On an average day, the 28 insurance companies whose records they reviewed had a combined total of 692 claims, at an average cost of $1,528 per claim. On Halloween, however, the number of claims was the highest for any day of the year, an average of 1,253.
