Severe storms raced across northern Minnesota on Sunday night, spawning two apparent tornadoes and dropping hail the size of softballs in some locations. The National Weather Service in Duluth received a report of a tornado north of Staples in Cass County at about 6:30 p.m. It was reported by law enforcement and later corroborated by photos and video, said Carol Christenson, warning coordination meteorologist with the Weather Service. About a half-hour later, radar picked up signs of debris being tossed into the sky by an apparent tornado in the Warba and Wawina areas, Christenson said. That information also was corroborated by a video later in the evening.
