Monday, September 23rd, 2013 — Despite a Kansas State Fair visit cut short from a ride-related injury that gave him an extended stay in the hospital, Earl Stevens plans to return to Hutchinson for the event next year. Stevens, 74, was resting comfortably at his Valley Falls home Wednesday, recovering from broken facial bones and nose after the Sept. 7 accident involving one of the fair’s zip line riders and Stevens. He still stays upbeat joking he is on "house arrest" until his injuries heal.Every year, Stevens and his wife, Mary, and their daughter and her family, camp out at the fair - pitching tents for a long weekend. The family arrived around midnight Friday and Stevens and his wife planned to stay until Sunday afternoon - taking in everything from his grandchildren’s 4-H exhibits to the free acts. "We all stay at the fair," he said. "(My children have) their tent and Mary and I have ours. We put a shelter thing up between them." They had the perfect camping spot this year, he added, in the lot behind the 4-H Centennial Hall.
