One person was killed and a dozen others were injured in a fire that ripped through a six-floor apartment building on West 136th Street in Manhattan on Monday evening, fire officials said. The person who died was badly burned in a stairwell on the top floor, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said at a news conference on Monday night. The victim had not been identified. Two other people in the building had minor injuries, and 10 firefighters suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, Mr. Nigro said. The cause of the fire was under investigation but was considered suspicious because of its size, Mr. Nigro said.
