Three Automakers Shine in 2023 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, Ford and Lincoln Lag Behind
Tuesday, June 27th, 2023 AutoTwo Detroit automakers have emerged as leaders in delivering top-quality vehicles, alongside their Asian and European counterparts. However, the 2023 U.S. Initial Quality Study by J.D. Power reveals that the Ford and Lincoln brands did not perform as strongly overall.
General Motors (GM) emerged as the frontrunner in the study, receiving the most awards for its individual models, with seven accolades. Hyundai and Toyota Motor Corp. followed closely, securing five and four awards respectively. In terms of vehicle segment awards, Chevrolet and Kia tied for the most wins with four each. The study indicated that industry-wide problems related to driving remained relatively stable, but quality declined in other categories, particularly features, controls, displays, and infotainment.
The study measures problems per 100 vehicles, allowing for comparison across brands. In certain categories, GM outperformed luxury brands such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Land Rover. Notably, the Ram 1500 claimed the highly coveted top ranking for the light-duty pickup truck category. In the midsize pickups segment, Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator tied for the best performers, with Ford Maverick securing the third position.
The study collected responses from 93,380 individuals who purchased or leased new 2023 model-year vehicles, surveying them early in their ownership period. Conducted from February to May, the 223-question survey focused on various aspects, including infotainment, features, controls and displays, exterior, driving assistance, interior, powertrain, seats, driving experience, and climate.
Overall, the 2023 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study showcases the strengths and areas of improvement for automakers, providing valuable insights for enhancing customer satisfaction and driving excellence in the industry.
