Tide Turning In Congress
Monday, August 23rd, 1999 Legislation & RegulationJust before Congress began its August recess, Reps. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga., and Greg Ganske, R-Iowa, a dentist and a surgeon, respectively, joined with—of all people!—Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., to offer the Consensus Managed Care Improvement Act, H.R. 2723. Such apostasy is big buzz material inside the Beltway for purely political reasons. But we wonder what the general public will make of the fact that these two staunchly conservative members of Congress, who were medical professionals before their legislative careers, got together with such a high-profile liberal Democrat to offer a bill with significant patient protections and broad, bipartisan support.
