Two Studies Reveal Increase In Motorcycle Deaths Due To Repeal Of Fla. Helmet Law

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005 Auto Legislation & Regulation

According to two studies by the government and the Institute for Highway Safety, motorcycle fatalities have risen sharply in Florida since the state repealed its mandatory helmet law in 2000. The study found that in the three years following Florida’s repeal of its mandatory helmet law, 933 motorcyclists were killed, which was an 81 percent increase from the 515 bikers that were killed from 1997 to 1999. The study also found that 45 percent of those bikers killed were not wearing helmets.
