The House easily passed the Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act on Wednesday, March 10, legislation endorsed by the White House that would bar people from suing restaurants on the ground that a restaurant‘s food was the cause of a person‘s obesity.
Known by many as the cheeseburger bill, it would curb the threat of obesity claims against fast-food franchises that provide millions of jobs nationwide.
"It‘s unfortunate that this kind of legislation even has to be discussed but it may be necessary to help keep absurd lawsuits out of the court system," said NAMIC Regulatory Affairs Manager Marsha Harrison. "It‘s a question of personal responsibility and some consumers, with the help of their attorneys, want to make someone else pay for their own bad behavior.
