Monday, October 1st, 2001 — The National Association of Independent Insurers is the latest group cautioning insurers to be alert for fraudulent claims emanating from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The Des Plaines, Ill.-based organization detailed a series of scams to look out for- including bogus auto and workers' compensation claims.
NAII noted that, while the attacks "generated a feeling of solidarity and a desire to help" for most Americans, "for the unscrupulous, it's just another opportunity to bilk the system by filing fraudulent insurance claims."
"Although most insurance claims will be legitimate, criminals view tragedies such as this as an chance to make a quick buck," stated John G. Eager, NAII senior director of claims services. "That's why insurers will carefully investigate questionable claims and work with law enforcement agencies to arrest these scam artists," he said.
