Atlantic hurricane forecasting this season is placing greater emphasis on the subtropics because El Niño typically suppresses tropical development across the Main Development Region while increasing the relative importance of storms that form farther north. Historically, about two-thirds of Atlantic tropical cyclones originate in the Main Development Region, but during strong El Niño years that share falls to roughly half. That shift makes the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic east of Florida more important areas to monitor.

Several destructive hurricanes, including Katrina, Alicia, Joaquin, and Milton, developed from subtropical origins. Those waters are currently running well above average temperatures, with parts of the Gulf at record or near record warmth for this time of year. Warm ocean temperatures alone do not guarantee tropical development, but they can provide additional fuel when atmospheric conditions become favorable.

For insurance claims professionals, this outlook reinforces the need to closely monitor the Gulf Coast and Florida throughout the season, even when activity in the traditional Atlantic hurricane belt remains quiet. Storms that develop closer to the U.S. coastline can shorten preparation time for insurers, adjusters, restoration contractors, and policyholders, making catastrophe response planning and resource allocation more challenging.

Forecasters are also watching the possibility of a weak disturbance developing in the northern Gulf next week. While some artificial intelligence forecast models have suggested more aggressive development scenarios, meteorologists caution that those models have shown limited skill in predicting storm intensity. Conventional ensemble guidance and Google’s DeepMind ensemble currently place development odds between 10% and 20%, with most scenarios keeping any system below hurricane strength. There is no immediate cause for concern, but forecast trends over the coming days will be important to watch.
