Tanya Morales had seen the flames charring the hillside beyond her front door and feared that she might have to flee. But the most she had to do was clean the ash from her white van: The blaze that torched more than 6,000 acres left her home and her neighbors‘ unscathed.

"This time I was more worried because last year it wasn‘t so close," Morales, 23, said of the fire. But she trusted those who came to fight the blaze. "I was confident they wouldn‘t let it get to us."
Fires have spread across more than 31,000 acres in California, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of homes and the deployment of more than 3,000 personnel in a fire season that has come weeks earlier than usual. (Related video: Fire burns near Los Angeles)
