Worker Violence: Serious Security Threat
Thursday, June 15th, 2000 Workers' CompensationViolence in the workplace is considered the most significant security threat to American business by the Fortune 1000 corporate security professionals recently surveyed by Pinkerton, a security services company based in Westlake, Calif. Concerns about Internet and network security rose from seventh place in last year‘s annual survey to tie for second place with business interruption and disaster recovery. Although the threat of workplace violence also ranked first in the 1999 survey, it is an even greater concern today, with an average importance score 10 percent higher than in 1999, according to Pinkerton. Nearly one-third of the respondents noted an increase in the number of violent incidents in their companies. Violence in the workplace is estimated to cost employers $36 billion annually, the Workplace Violence Research Institute reported.
