The Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center in Jackson has issued a
BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING which is in effect until 10 PM MST
Friday...
* WHAT...Avalanche danger remains very dangerous in the
backcountry due to an unusually weak snowpack.
* WHERE...The mountains of western Wyoming, including the Snake
River, Salt River, Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Teton, and Togwotee
Ranges.
* WHEN...Until 10 PM MST Friday, January 19.
* IMPACTS...Human-triggered avalanches large enough to bury people
are very likely to occur on most aspects and elevations in the
backcountry. Avoid traveling on or below slopes steeper than 30
degrees.
* PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Travel in avalanche
terrain is not recommended. Avalanches may be triggered
remotely—from flat terrain above, below, and to the sides of
steep slopes. Avalanches may involve deeper weak layers of snow
and produce a larger avalanche than expected. Avalanches could
run onto low angle terrain, hitting paths, roads or groomed
snowmobile trails.
