Rounds of Moderate to Heavy Rainfall On Track to Affect the Area
Through the End of the Week...
A slow-moving cold front will approach from the west today through
Thursday, before crossing the region on Thursday night. This system
will bring periods of rain, possibly moderate to heavy at times, to
eastern Kentucky. At this time, between one and nearly two inches of
rainfall is forecast through Thursday night. Locally higher amounts
are possible where isolated thunderstorms and training occurs. With
this rainfall, decent and significant rises on creeks and streams
will be possible through Thursday night. Accordingly, there is the
potential for some localized flooding where repeated thunderstorms
or heavy rains occur. The larger rivers will then likely see
significant rises or minor flooding Thursday into Friday. At this
time, the Cumberland River Basin appears to be the most susceptible
to seeing flooding; however, portions of the Kentucky River Basin
could also experience substantial rises.
An additional round of rainfall and isolated thunderstorms is
forecast from Saturday into Saturday night. There is high degree of
uncertainty in rainfall amounts from this system at the end of the
week, but they could be moderate to heavy. Should this play out that
way, renewed rises on creeks and rivers would occur with localized
flooding again possible.
Stay tuned for further updates.
