People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around
trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of
your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if
you must drive.
* WHAT...West winds 20 to 30 mph with localized gusts up to 60
mph expected.
* WHERE...Schuyler, Tompkins and Cortland counties.
* WHEN...From 2 PM this afternoon to 7 AM EST Thursday.
* IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines.
Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be
difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...South to southwest winds will develop ahead
of a cold front this afternoon, with gusts 35 to 45 mph. The
front may be accompanied by sudden stronger wind gusts and
possible thunderstorms, with winds shifting to the west in its
wake. Winds will be strongest behind the front, gusting 50 to 60
mph at times, especially overnight, as much colder air also
quickly moves into the area.
