Avoiding all avalanche terrain is advised. Very large destructive avalanches may run long distances into mature forests, valley floors, trails, and flat terrain that is normally considered safe. Backcountry travelers should expect strong winds, limited visibility and white-out conditions. Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area of this or any avalanche center. AVWGYX The following message is transmitted at the request of the Forest Service Mount Washington Avalanche Center, Gorham NH. The Mount Washington Avalanche Center in Gorham has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING for the following areas: NWS Gray ME - NHZ002 (Coos County) * WHAT...A significant winter storm bringing 10 - 20+ inches of snow will create very dangerous avalanche conditions today, March 23, 2024 through Sunday, March 24, 2024. Steep slopes; including but not limited to: Tuckerman Ravine, Huntington Ravine, Gulf of Slides, Great Gulf, and Ammonoosuc Ravine are areas where dangerous and destructive avalanches are likely. These avalanches may be large enough to bury multiple people, do significant damage to trees or buildings and will likely run far down in paths or to areas that are normally considered safe zones. AVOIDING ALL AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS ADVISED. * WHERE...The Presidential Range avalanche forecast area, including Tuckerman, Huntington Ravine, Gulf of Slides, Great Gulf, Ammonoosuc Ravine and steep, open terrain in the mountains that are bounded by US Rt 2, US Rt 302, and NH Rt 16. This includes hiking trails that traverse across steep terrain like Summer Lion Head trail. Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area where steep, open terrain exists that has collected wind drifted snow. * WHEN...In effect from Sat 07:00 EDT to Sun 07:00 EDT. * IMPACTS...Heavy snow and wind will create widespread unstable snow conditions. Very large snow drifts that could avalanche spontaneously or easily from the weight of a person will exist throughout steep terrain including hiking trails.
