Conditions are favorable for the development of weak, brief funnel clouds. This type of funnel cloud is harmless, but on rare occasions they can briefly touch down, producing wind gusts over 50 mph. If a funnel cloud is spotted move indoors or to safe harbor and report your sighting to the National Weather Service. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
At 210 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm capable of producing waterspouts over marine areas near Arabi, or near Chalmette, moving north at 5 mph. HAZARD...Waterspouts, winds in excess of 40 mph, and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous waters. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include... Meraux, Jefferson, Chalmette, Gretna, Lakefront Airport, New Orleans, East New Orleans, Arabi, Metairie, Terrytown, Westwego, Bridge City, Violet, Harvey, and Marrero. This includes the following Interstates... Interstate 10 in Louisiana between mile markers 228 and 255. Interstate 510 between mile markers 1 and 3. Interstate 610 between mile markers 1 and 4.
