Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. Life-threatening rip currents. If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
* WHAT...For the Beach Hazards Statement, dangerous rip currents. For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet, building to 10 to 12 feet expected in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood Warning, moderate oceanside coastal flooding expected, with 2 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Minor soundside flooding expected, inundation 1 to 2 feet above ground level. * WHERE...East Carteret County, and Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island. * WHEN...For the Beach Hazards Statement, from 8 AM EDT this morning through this evening. For the High Surf Advisory, from 5 PM this afternoon to 8 AM EDT Saturday. For the Coastal Flood Warning, from 11 AM Tuesday to 8 PM EDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Moderate oceanside coastal flooding, with inundation 2 to 3 feet above ground level, locally higher with wave action, resulting in an elevated threat of property damage. Flooding will likely extend inland from the waterfront threatening some homes, businesses and critical infrastructure. Dangerous swimming, surfing conditions and beach erosion expected. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Greatest potential for impacts along vulnerable portions of Highway 12 on Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands. Portions of Highway 12 may be impassable at times due to ocean overwash, especially around times of high tide. Minor soundside flooding also expected, with greatest impacts expected in Downeast Carteret. The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide, which will occur around 7:00 PM Monday.
