Three people out of Pender and New Hanover counties are facing charges of fraud for allegedly engineering a fake hit-and-run accident to collect nearly $30,000 from insurance claims, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin announced on Wednesday. Kerry Hall, a spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of Insurance, said the suspects are alleged to have told authorities they were traveling in two separate cars on July 19, 2009, when the driver of a third vehicle caused a hit-and-run accident near the intersection of Spencer and Porter roads outside of Burgaw.
