The top U.S. product safety official said on Monday the agency has failed to persuade Chinese makers of defective drywall to compensate American homeowners, in a dispute that threatens to mar strained trade ties. The failure to persuade about 13 makers of contaminated drywall to redress American homeowners has been a major stumbling block for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is responsible for protecting Americans from unsafe household products.
