A train hit a van in Salem and police said it all started with a man eating a hamburger. Salem police said John Berry, 34, drove onto the railroad tracks near Boone Road and Eastland Avenue Southeast at 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Investigators said he hit a cable that is supposed to stop drivers from driving onto the tracks. The airbags in Berry’s van then deployed. The van was stuck as an Amtrak train barreled down toward it. Salem police said Berry got out before the collision.
