Two mothers and their four children were killed early on Tuesday after their minivan was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer and burst into flames as it tumbled down an embankment north of Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol said.
After surviving the crash, the fathers of the victims suffered burns to their arms trying to free their children and wives trapped inside the van, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Frank Romero. "When we arrived on scene, we saw the van starting to catch fire. We saw the husbands come running up to us, told us their families were in the vehicle still," Officer Dan Williams told Los Angeles television station KABC in video posted online.
