2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast Revised, More Activity Predicted
Friday, July 7th, 2023 CatastropheClimatologists from Colorado State University have issued a revised forecast, predicting an above-average number of tropical storms and hurricanes this year due to unusually warm waters in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Colorado State University Tropical Weather and Climate Research Group has raised their initial forecast, projecting a more active season with 18 named storms, including nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes with winds exceeding 111 mph.
The revised forecast takes into account the record-high temperatures observed in the Atlantic Ocean in June. Surface temperatures have been approximately 3 degrees warmer than normal, surpassing the previous record set in 2008. These warm waters provide additional fuel for hurricanes, increasing their potential for energy and intensification.
According to Colorado State University’s forecast, there is a 50% probability of a major hurricane making landfall along the continental US coastlines this season. This exceeds the long-period average of 43% observed from 1880 to 2020. The increased likelihood of landfall poses additional concerns for coastal regions, highlighting the importance of preparedness and response measures.
