A Lie By Any Other Name

Friday, September 15th, 2000 Liability Litigation Property Subrogation

Padding ... Exaggeration ... False swearing ... Lies come in all shapes, sizes and colors. While these common types of lies may all look the same and are all strong indicators of insurance fraud, there are some subtle differences in each of these types of statements that adjusters should learn when they begin investigating claims. Exaggeration of injuries or damages to increase a claim‘s value, for instance, is known as "padding." An insidious type of fraud, by its nature, padding is difficult to detect and often considered harmless by insureds, claimants, police and prosecutors. Prosecutors like to call this type of dishonesty "soft fraud."
