The Austin Independent School District’s chief financial officer has been placed on leave following an arrest on insurance fraud charges. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office reported that the 51-year-old was booked on July 31st and released on a surety bond on August 1st. The Round Rock Police Department issued the warrant for the arrest.
The district announced the CFO’s leave in a brief statement on its website. Although the CFO had submitted his resignation effective August 16th, Superintendent MatÃas Segura placed him on leave as of July 31st. Ms. Katrina Montgomery, who has been with the district for three years as Assistant Superintendent of Finance, has been named Interim CFO.
The district emphasized that the charges are related to the CFO’s personal affairs and not his professional duties. They reassured that an annual external audit is conducted on AISD’s finances, with results made publicly available. Additionally, internal audits are regularly performed, and the district is working with the board to determine any necessary further reviews.
