Auto Theft in Canada Drops 17% in 2024

Friday, July 19th, 2024 Auto Fraud Legislation & Regulation Risk Management

Auto thefts in Canada fell by 17% during the first six months of 2024, largely due to coordinated efforts between police, government initiatives, and heightened public awareness. The Equite Association’s report highlighted significant declines in Ontario and Quebec, though Atlantic Canada saw a rise. Bryan Gast, vice-president of investigative services at Equite, emphasized the importance of these measures in combating organized crime and reducing vehicle thefts.

Ontario experienced a 14% reduction in auto thefts, while Quebec saw a dramatic 36% decline. This contrasts sharply with the previous year, where vehicle thefts had surged by 50% in Quebec and nearly as much in Ontario. The Insurance Bureau of Canada reported $1.5 billion in claims for 2023, a record high, underscoring the financial impact of these crimes.

Despite these positive trends, Atlantic Canada faced an 11% increase in thefts, likely due to the deterrent measures in other provinces. The federal government’s initiatives, including expanded shipment container inspections and international reporting of stolen vehicles, aim to further disrupt organized crime networks.

Gast remains cautiously optimistic about the continued decrease in auto thefts but stresses the need for ongoing collaboration and public awareness. The federal action plans, announced in May, include comprehensive strategies to address the multifaceted nature of auto theft and organized crime.
