Backup Plans Can Avert Data Disaster

Monday, July 10th, 2000 Property Technology

Malicious hackers, viruses and other destructive programs, natural disasters, lightning strikes, fires and industrial accidents, everyday human error—all represent a significant threat to a company’s most precious asset—its data. And while information systems departments have many tools with which to minimize these risks, the most valuable weapon against disastrous data loss may be the simple duplication of existing files and software applications on a regular basis—in a word, backup. Common sense tells us that having a duplicate set of files is a wise—if not crucial—precaution, but which files should be backed up and how often should that happen? According to most experts in the field, the answer depends on how critical the data is and how often it must be used in a company’s daily operations.
